Well done on the upcoming live event, Vicki. And on everything else! Goals evolving and appreciating the small day-to-day things in the meantime.

Ooh great! What film are you doing? I’m really digging watching & hearing about these cinematic gems from a century ago and never would have thought to give them a shot without Jonathan if I’m perfectly honest. Being on Substack has opened me up to so many cool things & people like that 😃

I’m doing The Leatherneck from 1929. Yeah I enjoy watching the really old stuff. There’s something about them isn’t there.

I try and watch them for my newsletter but where to start! Glad to have a bit of guidance by Jonathan and an excuse to talk about it too!

Look forward to your episode! Jonathan has been keeping my company whilst cooking dinner these past few days - it's such a fun idea touring through all those old gems 😃

Great work here, Vicki.

Something has just occurred to me that you may be interested in. As you may remember, I live in Japan. I have a friend, an American professor of history here who teaches at Shizuoka Prefectural University, who has written two books of accounts and interviews he did with the remaining hibakusha - the atom bomb survivors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Here are links to these two books:

He has been interviewed by a few journals plus the ABC (Australian Broadcasting, not the U.S. TV network) - but as far as I can see, ignored by the New York Times (which stings as he is a New Yorker), and I'm not aware that the Guardian has done anything on him.

I'm not suggesting you traipse all the way here to do a doc on him, but...just throwing out ideas.

The interviews he did with them and the writing of these books were traumatic for him, perhaps all the more as he did the interviews directly in Japanese (as he is fluent in it). But he believes it was necessary to undergo this. It's a fascinating journey he chronicled on Facebook about the interviews and the writing of the books.

Hey Lee - sorry for such a tardy response (kids school holidays = v patchy productivity! 🤦🏻‍♀️)

Thanks so much for this - funnily enough I've actually heard of your friend via a review I read from an American writer who's currently making a feature doc about survivors and soldiers at Hiroshima & Nagasaki (https://www.atomicveteransfilm.com). I'd love to chat to him - it's such important work, especially with the 80th anniversary approaching. I'll DM you.

Ahh I know these ‘in between’ moments well… when one project completes and another is yet to show itself yet. I think these times can be both powerful and also disconcerting but have learned to appreciate them as a big part of the creative process. I am so happy to hear that you found my offerings supportive in your rebrand, I can’t wait to see it when it comes to life! Xx

Ah thanks Lauren. I feel like there's a lot of pressure to be always creating, always producing. But I'm learning that forcing it just doesn't really work. So I'm doing my best to lean into that space of gestation and transition - I'm still in my cocoon but will be emerging with my shiny butterfly wings soon ❤️
