Oh, how lovely, Vicki - thank you so much for linking to my post! It's funny that you should mention 'Spargelzeit' - when I au-paired in Germany I was amazed at the sight of their anaemic asparagus. It was thick and very firm, with a different flavour to the green stuff. We'd peel it (!) and boil it and serve it with wafer-thin slices of Schinken (raw cured ham) and sooooooooooooo much geschmolzenes Butter - wohl wahnsinnig!

Yeah I had the same amazement when I did a German exchange as a teenager. I quite liked the white stuff. But you just can’t beat the classic English green spears eh. Might be controversial but we’ve recently started doing them in the air fryer with plenty of olive oil & salt. So delicious!

It’s so true that things ending make way for new and different things to begin. That’s how we evolve and I’m hoping our industry will be no different. I am sad for the brief era of time where we could watch tv as free. I believe that will be ending sooner rather than later. And we need to work out our audience procurement for project’s differently as well but I think we’ll get there.

Yep I think we have to be optimistic. It definitely feels like we’re in a real shake up moment. That can feel scary but there’s a lot that’s crappy about the current way things are done so trying to do things differently can hopefully also lead to doing things better eh

I was especially interested in your knowing summary of the dire state of the doco industry/market. I had no idea but then, there’s no reason I should know, and it’s not as if the general media bemoans this. I think the world loses a lot if great docos stop being made.

Yeah it’s really tough out there for docs at the moment - and I didn’t even mention the terrible situation in factual tv which is multiple times bigger in the uk than the indie doc sector. A terrifyingly high percentage of factual tv freelancers have had no work at all in 2024. There is work going on though to try to find new models & paradigms. I’m sure people will always want to make documentaries - just as many people will always want to watch them. We just have to find ways to pay for them. Sure I will return to this topic!
